Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds 2012

(90-93) points Vinous: “Reduced aromas of cherry and licorice. Supple, broad and densely packed, with musky cherry, spice and herb flavors deepened by saline minerality. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and excellent breadth. The longest of these 2012s to this point.”

One of the great domaines of Burgundy, the de Montille family winemaking heritage can be traced back to the 17th century in Volnay. Taking up the reigns in 1947, young Hubert de Montille was driven by a passion and a pursuit of quality. He strategically acquired parcels to add to the domaine’s holdings, inspired by the notion of terroir and the idea that his wines should be made to age in order to express their true character. Sadly, Hubert passed away in November 2014 at the age of 84, but his legacy is safe in the capable ands of his son Etienne and daughter Alix who have been gradually incorporated into the day to day running of the estate over the last thirty years.
In 1995, the family began converting the estate to organic farming. Throughout the years, Hubert and his children have worked hard to expand the family holdings, which now consist of twenty hectares almost entirely in top premier crus and grand crus throughout the Cote d’Or.
Stylistically, the de Montilles are purists and tend to treat each vintage uniquely. The wines are known for their incredible finesse and the complexity that develops with maturity, as they show a distinguished, fine and elegant expression.
