Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet 2014

Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Canet 2014

93 points View From the Cellar: “In the mind of Gérard Boudot, “Champ Canet has the perfect rapport of chalk and clay in the soils for archetypical Puligny-Montrachet.” The domaine has four distinct parcels in the vineyard, as this is their largest premier cru holding, with one of these planted with ninety-two year-old vines. The 2014 Champ Canet is utterly classic in profile, jumping from the glass in a fine blend of pear, white peach, fresh almond, spring flowers, a fine base of chalky soil nuances and a judicious base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very refined on the attack, with a lovely core, excellent soil inflection, crisp acids and a very long, youthful and vibrant finish. Another absolutely stellar premier cru. (Drink between 2018-2040)”

Etienne Sauzet established his domaine after inheriting a few hectares as a young man, and by 1950 had grown the estate to include some of the most prestigious vineyards around Puligny Montrachet, including small plots of the grands crus Batard Montrachet and Bienvenues Batard Montrachet.
After he passed in 1975, Etienne’s daughter inherited the vineyards and left them to her three children, including Jeanine and her husband Gerard Boudot, who took over and began selling the entire production under the domaine’s own label. Jeanine’s daughter Emilie joined the family business in 2002, along with her husband Benoit Riffault.
Sauzet wines exude aristocracy and elegance - concentrated and opulent, yet beautifully proportioned. In riper vintages, they exemplify the combination of power and elegance. In leaner vintages, they show more finesse and breed. Batard Montrachet is a big wine - plump and rich in character, but with a tension and energy underneath, the fruit is marked by a firm structure and ripe acidity. The wine can age for 15+ years, and when fully mature develops a refined texture that exhibits all of the nuance and complexity one can find in a top grand cru.
