Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2010

Rene Rostaing Côte-Rôtie La Landonne 2010

96 points Wine Advocate: “The prodigious 2010 Cote Rotie La Landonne reveals a dense purple color along with a huge, impressive perfume of roasted meats, black currants, black raspberries and scorched earth. This 100% Syrah comes from vines planted on exceptionally steep slopes composed of schist and iron-like sub-soils. Some graphite also makes an appearance in this mineral-dominated, well-delineated, rich, intense wine.”

Rene Rostaing is one of Cote Rotie’s finest classical producers. His first vintage 1971 was made from a tiny parcel of vines in the Cote Blonde vineyard, but it was not until the mid-1980s that his wines were more widely discovered. His original plot of vines in Cote Blonde came from his grandfather (also a respected winemaker), and in 1977 he was able to add another small quarter hectare of vines in the La Landonne vineyard and produce his first bottling that vintage.
Rene’s wife, Christiane also comes from a winegrowing family - her father Albert Dervieux was the President of the Cote Rotie growers syndicate for over thirty years of his long career, and is also considered one of the finest producers in the region during the post-war years. As well, her uncle was the famous Marius Gentaz of Domaine Gentaz-Dervieux, the finest of all producers in this region during the course of his long and illustrious career. Both of these gentlemen, upon their retirements, handed over the reins of their parcels to Rostaing, and today he has some of the largest holdings of old vines in several of the very finest vineyards in Cote Rotie.
Rene has always been capable of embracing modern winemaking techniques with an eye towards improving the quality of his classically-styled wines. His cellar practices are quite traditional, and the wines are superb examples of old style Cote Rotie. Recent vintages demonstrate that Rostaing’s wines continue to become more transparent and precise. He has been remarkably consistent over the years, and the very high quality of the wines shows the difference in vintage characteristics while expressing the purity of the terroir and his skillful touch.
